Michaela Weglinski joined The Piedmont Environmental Council as the Stewardship Assistant in June 2024. Her work involves fulfilling the annual monitoring and stewardship responsibilities for PEC’s 90+ easement and fee simple properties across our nine-county service area.

A lifelong love of the outdoors brought Michaela from the publishing industry to the conservation field. In addition to working with landowners and organizations on easement stewardship, she enjoys community-based conservation activities such as removing invasive plants from local parks, planting trees in riparian buffer areas, and participating in expert-led field walks.

Prior to joining PEC, Michaela worked with Fauquier County as their Conservation Easement Stewardship Assistant and previously served as an intern with the National Park Service and Smithsonian’s Virginia Working Landscapes. She also volunteered at several of PEC’s tree planting events and gained hands-on easement monitoring experience as a volunteer with the Valley Conservation Council.

Earlier in her career, Michaela worked for National Geographic as a children’s books editor and wrote several children’s books about animals for Scholastic.

Michaela grew up in Washington state and southeastern Massachusetts and has a B.A. in Writing. Literature, and Publishing from Emerson College. She lives in northern Virginia with her partner and their two cats.
