Clarke County has a time-honored tradition of promoting and protecting its agricultural roots. It was one of the first counties in the nation to adopt protective zoning regulations, and continues to conserve its unique heritage.
1,465 acres were preserved in 2007, bringing the grand total to more than 18,500 acres of privately conserved land.
The Comprehensive Plan, which serves as the guide and provides a vision for the county's future, and the Historic Resources Plan were updated in 2006 and adopted in early 2007.
One development issue that is ongoing is review of the new high school site plan to resolve stormwater management questions and potential building instability due to underlying geology.
