Jul 28-Aug 8: Take the Journey-Summer 2008

Monday, July 28, 2008 - Friday, August 8, 2008

Various locations from Gettysburg, PA to Charlottesville, VA

Students are invited to move through history this summer as they hike, bike, canoe, and pod along the Journey Through Hallowed Ground, the 175 mile swath of land from Gettysburg to Monticello. This Extreme program introduces participants to Where America Happened as they study the legacy of leadership provided by men and women along the trail and the decisions they made that shaped our nation. What hung in the balance as James Madison's contemporaries deliberated over the Constitution? What did George Gilmore gain by staying in the south after the Emancipation Proclamation? Was Clara Barton out of line on the battlefield? Students answer these and other questions as they work with expert historians including authors, re-enactors, cartographers, professors and archaeologists who bring authenticity and depth to the experience.

Throughout the journey, students capture the stories using video, i-Pods and digital cameras. The photographs, video clips and sound bites are then spun into an original podcast that focuses on the lessons of leadership from each site and how we can apply those lessons to our contemporary world.

Registration is open to rising 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in Culpeper County Schools. Applications are available here. Tuition is $520, and enrollment is limited to 24 students. For more information, email Ladona Gorham or Marye Griffith, or visit The Journey Through Hallowed Ground website.
