Job Opening: Stewardship Coordinator
Introduction
The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) is seeking to hire a Stewardship Coordinator to work with the Director of Land Conservation and conservation field officers throughout Virginia's northern Piedmont region. PEC, founded in 1972, is based in Warrenton, Virginia and now has more than 45 employees in nine offices, and has been instrumental in the protection of over 300,000 acres.
Description of Position
The Stewardship Coordinator will take primary responsibility for administration and stewardship of the easements PEC holds and co-holds in its nine-county region. Additionally, this person will work with landowners to encourage sound land management and stewardship of important resources on private land in the Piedmont.
Responsibilities include:
Easement Intake:
-Evaluating proposed easement terms to ensure that natural resources are adequately protected
-Working closely with the rest of the land conservation staff to ensure the proposed easement language is practical to monitor and enforce
-Completing all fieldwork and paperwork necessary to conduct easement baseline documentation reports
Easement Stewardship:
-Conducting monitoring visits on all PEC-held easements annually
-Completing courthouse research on easements annually
-Maintaining stewardship files
-Maintaining good relationships with easement landowners and co-holding organizations
-Working with land conservation staff on easement interpretations, approvals and amendments
-Managing stewardship database
-Maintaining up-to-date information on PEC's Stewardship and Legal Defense Funds
-Training PEC and other land trust staff on stewardship issues
-Tracking PEC's stewardship programs and issues
-Participating in annual evaluation of all stewardship policies and procedures
Land Management:
-Encouraging land management and stewardship on private land throughout the Piedmont region by:
-Encouraging and assisting private landowners to participate in local, state, and federal grant and cost share programs
-Creating and distributing PEC's Natural Resources Management and Stewardship Binders.
-Organizing and hosting educational workshops
-Helping to promote local rural economic initiatives such as the local food and wood movements
-Updating, maintaining and implementing management plans on PEC's fee simple properties
The position will be based in PEC's Warrenton office.
Qualifications
-A B.A. or equivalent degree, with significant course work in natural resources, forestry, agriculture or related fields. Graduate degree preferred.
-Working knowledge of GIS (ArcView 9.2)
-Prior experience in land conservation, real estate, law or related field preferred
-Strong oral and written communication skills, including good attention to detail
-Excellent interpersonal skills
-Familiarity with database systems
-Requires minimum supervision
-Comfortable working outdoors in all types of weather on all types of property
-Willing to work long hours, including some weekends and evenings
